  • World War II ends on August 14 with the unconditional surrender of Japan. The Instrument of Surrender was signed on September 2, 1945 aboard the battleship USS Missouri.
     
  • On August 6 the first atomic bomb was dropped from a B-29 on Hiroshima. The second atomic bomb was dropped on August 9 on Nagasaki.
