  • The first manmade satellite, Sputnik I, was launched on October 4 by The USSR into an 142 mile by 588 mile orbit around the earth.
     
  • On July 16 a Chance Vought F8U-1P Crusader flown by Maj. John Glenn, Jr. (USMC) set the Los Angeles to New York speed record with an average speed of 760 mph.
     
  • Army Jupiter IRBM was launched on May 31. It was the first successful IRBM launched and achieved a range of 1,500 miles.
     
  • Department of Defense announced that four to six Soviet ICBM tests took place in the Spring of 1957.
