• The Cuban Missile crisis began on October 22 when Soviet nuclear armed missile launch sites, capable of placing most of the U S mainland at risk to nuclear attack, were discovered via photo reconnaissance. The discoveries were made by the U-2 and the F8U-1P aircraft.
   
• John Glenn orbits the earth 3 times on February 20 in spacecraft “Friendship 7” to become the first American in space.
