F6U-1 Afterburning

  Cover 1 2 3 4 5 6

The advantages of this large boost In thrust for military application is obvious, Since the operation of the afterburner does not effect the performance of the internal engine components such as the compressor and turbine, it can be applied to existing jet engines. Also, since the afterburner requires no increase in the airflow to the engine, and since it is located in series with engine, it can be installed with no significant increase in the frontal area of the airplane and the associated drag increase can be small. The major problems associated with the development of an afterburner are the materials and cooling problem occasioned by the extremely high gas temperatures, the problem of obtaining a very high rate of heat release in a fast moving gas stream, and the problem of obtaining satisfactory control.
